Today started out foggy and rough.
Pea soup and dodging Buoy 10 boats before running a sloppy bar. We ran west and finally got past the fog. We got to the tuna grounds and my buddy Jim on Epic charters said WFO so we ran his way. We reaped the rewards of his chum line and had fish on the deck almost right away. We then started to get small bait stops going on every other troll fish. A good day went great when we had our last stop at the end of day and put 14 on the boat for a total of 27. Not 27 regular tuna, but 27 pigs that damn near plugged our boat. Great crew, great ocean, great fishing. Clark and I are at again in the AM. Captain Mike

DirtyE decided to call today's trip and the next few days do not look very nice, so we are shut down until the weekend.
The good news is that the weekend looks great. https://www.windfinder.com/forecast/astoria_canyon_buoy Luckily Peterson CAT was able to get a tech on short notice so we get some of the non-critical warranty work done. Captain Mike Here is a great video shot by one of our crew this week. Who knew DirtyE could dock so fast? Captain Mike I arrived at the boat bright and early and Clark and John had the boat prepped and ready to go.
I know something was wrong when I saw a buddy's charter already back at the dock, as he left at 2 AM. Clark was on the air talking to another buddy and the news was bad. They ran out to the 124.25 and could only go 10 knots. No bueno. We scrubbed today, Saturday, and Sunday. Monday and Tuesday should fish, but after that it looks lousy for a few. https://www.windfinder.com/forecast/astoria_canyon_buoy Captain Mike DirtyE and Clark ran her today and are still headed in at 5 PM.
The only details I got were that they had a great crew, rough ocean, good fishing, and that they were almost plugged. Clark and I are at it again in the AM. Captain Mike We went back to the honey hole and the tuna were still there.
We had solid fishing all day long, with 4-5 fish bait stops. We had another junior tuna fisherman, Robert, who caught fish and kicked ass. We did not quite plug the boat, but caught a bunch of big tuna. Great crew, great fishing, and decent ocean. Captain Mike The pizza guys came back for more abuse.
The tuna almost killed them last year when the plugged the boat. We ran WAY out and were into fish within 30 minutes. Not a red hot bite, but a consistent bite. We had around 4 bait stops and after catching HUGE tuna for 4 hours they were beat and tapped out. We did not quite plug the boat, but got real close with only 5 fishermen. Clark and I are at it again in the AM. Captain Mike Fishing has been a little scratchy and we were hoping that the big blow stirred things up.
The PM bite has been better than the AM bite, so we decided to sleep in and leave at 9. We ran out to the fleet at the 125 line and heard nothing but lousy reports so we decided to take a chance and run WAY out, like 60 miles out. We saw some commercial boats and some two day charters from Westport, so we dropped in. We picked them off one at a time and got a small bite going and eventually ended up with 11 fat tuna. On the way in we heard lots of repots of skunkings and apparently we did better than everyone else, making us the tallest midgets today. On the way in our starboard CAT threw a code and we shut down for awhile and then it was fine. We are shut down for the next two days to get this sorted out before we head west again. A great crew, great ocean and not horrible fishing. Captain MIke When the wind blows, we clean the boat.
When we clean the boat we find stuff. Some left us a really nice reel and we want to get it back to the rightful owner. If you know who owns this reel, have them get in touch with us. At it again in the AM. Captain Mike DirtyE and Clark ran Shake N Bake on August 3rd.
Good crew and a nice ocean, but the fish are still very skittish. They got them boiling once, and they went down right away. They ended up with 7. The weird thing is the fish had empty stomachs. We have some theories and some game plans that we are going to try out. The wind is blowing us off the water Thursday and Friday, but Saturday looks nice. Captain Mike |
