Fishing has sucked, so we have not been fishing.
Mark Coleman's charters had a few good days, so we were pretty excited to get back out there. It started out SLOW in the AM, like it generally does during a full moon. I was pretty sure we were going to get skunked, as we had zero fish until around 1:30, when we finally got two. Then 4 more, then a double on the troll. It got better and better until 4 when it went WFO. We had to run back in lousy fog to beat the ebb on the bar, so we had to leave biting fish to get in. We did not plug the boat, but we came close. The fish were mainly regular sized fish for the first time in a long time. The charter is shut down for the year, but if the weather holds we should be doing a crew trip or three this week. Fishing has been pretty lousy the last few weeks out of Westport and Ilwaco, but pretty good south of us, so fish are on their way.
Last Friday Netflix released "Battlefish", an Ilwaco based tuna show produced by the makers of Wicked Tuna. Our buddies on the Opportunaty are the stars of the show- if you ever want to see real pros stack the deck, now is your chance. Captain Mike www.netflix.com/title/80195173 People always ask me what is the best month to fish and I say September or October, as we have had bad Julys and bad Augusts, but never a bad September..
We are booked out, but Kevin Newell has a lot of open dates. He fishes a bad ass, 50 knot, 36' Yellowfin out of Astoria Oregon, and stops by Ilwaco every morning to load up on live bait. When we were down last year he took a bunch of our clients out and they all had a great time and caught a lot of fish. Get in touch with Kevin now if you want to book a trip now. http://totalfisherman.com/oregon-tuna-charters.html Captain Mike Our crew drove a long, long way to fish today, so we had to get it done.
After a slow start, we had bait stop after bait stop. We slid on lots of jumpers and even had a very good troll bite. Captain Mike |
