Ouch.  We snapped a shaft.  Replacement one coming soon.

We pulled the boat today and it looks like we snapped a shaft.

That is one hell of a big piece of stainless steel to just shear.

Luckily Sheffield Propeller is able to make us a new one and luckily we have a spare prop.

Hopefully we can be back in the water on Wednesday.

Stay tuned.

Looks like you were lucky on several counts. The guy with Clark looks like he's seen a few broken shafts in his days. So what did he think caused an 1 1/2 stainless shaft to snap? Did the prop hit the rudder as it flew by?

As a wise man once told me, when you're faced with a problem in life and it goes away by throwing money at; it wasn't a big problem. Hope the fix is fast and you're out putting the hurt on the tuna soon.

Gary,

We hit something, maybe a mermaid.

It definitely left a mark in the starboard rudder.

It will need replacing, but that can wait until charlie leaves town.

We are holding on to the broken shaft and going to try and work it into the build of our new beach house- It would make a very stout railing.

I agree- anything that my credit card can fix is not a big problem.

We are rolling our cancellations to the first week of October, so hopefully everyone gets their day on Shake N Bake.

How do you hit something big enough to shear a massive stainless steel shaft without damaging your hull?

Reading similar accounts on Hulltruth, the common theme seems to be something caught in prop

My guess is they hit a log and bent the shaft, kept running the motor and shook that thing to death. The shaft would fail eventually.
