We went right back to the honey hole today and got them going right away.
The bite went WFO in 20 minutes and stayed that way. It was more than WFO, it was bat shit crazy. We tied hooks straight to braid and the tuna still fought over the baits. Average time to hook up was less than 5 seconds. After bait, swimbaits, and even a fly caught fish, Clark pulled out the only thing that had never produced, a topwater lure. Sure enough, as soon as it hit the water, tuna fought over it. Tuna exploded on the surface on our Shimano Orca topwater lure. We caught and released fish after fish and then finally tapped out. We left at 7 and were back at the dock by 1:30. It cannot get any better. Clark and I are at it again in the AM. Captain MIke

I now know what DirtyE was talking about when he said that Wednesday's fish were the most aggressive tuna he had ever seen.
It was a little lumpy, so we ran out slow (17-19 knots). It took around 45 minutes to find the fish and then all hell broke lose. Clark threw out a netful of bait and the tuna were instantly boiling EVERYWHERE. Insane. Every bait got bit, most within 10 seconds. Total chaos. At one point I just tied a hook to braid and a tuna instantly inhaled the anchovy. They were fighting over out bait 2 feet off the transom. We converted a bunch of people into tuna fisherman and ruined some more lives today. I can't wait to do it again in the AM. Captain Mike DirtyE and Clark ran today.
After a slow start, our buddy Mark Coleman called them in and they found an amazing school of tuna. Per DirtyE it was "the most aggressive bite I have ever seen". Check out the toad below. 37 lbs in JULY? We are going to have to start using two gaffs in September if this keeps up. Sitting out the wind tomorrow, but at it again on Friday. Captain Mike I am shorebound so my report is a little light on details.
DirtyE, Clark, and the crew had another great day. A few short of plugged, but huge fish. How big are they going to be in September?? DirtyE and Clark are at it again in the AM. Captain Mike Another great day of fishing.
We turned a bunch of newbies and non-fishermen into killers. We had 40 fish in the boat by 10:45 when someone ran right on top of our boiling fish. We reloaded and trolled west. 45 minutes later we had a quad on the troll and then all hell broke lose. Within 5 minutes they were boiling all around the boat. We plugged the boat in a few minutes and then caught and released around 10 fish and everyone was worn out. I am tapping out for a few days, but DirtyE and Clark are at it again in the AM. Captain Mike After the big windstorm it looked like a decent day today, so we headed west.
It was a little lumpy, but flattened out. We dropped gear and trolled west and pretty soon we were into them. After a "practice" stop we got them boiling around the boat and all hell broke loose. An hour or so later and we were plugged. Levi, our 9 year-old fish killer, boated multiple tuna and even jackpoled one. I am pretty sure we started him towards a long career of fish killing. At it again in the AM. Captain Mike The forecast was calling for gusts to 32 knots in the afternoon, so we ran out early.
Luck was against us until the wind starting howling around noon. After a few practice stops, it went WFO. We put 20 on the deck and then broke out the jackpole. We plugged the boat and left a huge school of boiling tuna. It was one of the worst oceans I have seen off the CR, but we ran in comfortably at 25 knots. Herniques makes the best boats in the world and today proved it again. Back at it again on Sunday. Captain Mike Great fishing and great crew.
We ran out to our numbers from yesterday and got them boiling around the boat. After a "practice stop", it went dead for an hour or two. Then we got 4 on a stop. 10 on the next. The last stop went WFO with free swimming tuna cruising under the boat. The water was so clear you could see fish 50' feet down. We could see the tuna inhaling our bait. We called plugged and ended up plugged plus a bunch more. The tuna were HUGE. At it again in the AM. Captain Mike We ran out to yesterday's numbers and got a couple, but we were not feeling it.
Clark got some intel from a buddy so we took a chance and ran there. Within a minute of dropping troll gear a rod went off. Then all hell broke lose. Fish EVERYWHERE around the boat boiling. "FRESH ONE" was shouted out over and over. By the time we caught our breath there were 30 fish on the deck. Then the jackpole came out. Pretty soon Clark did the math and called it, as we were out of room. We ran in at 27 knots on a flat ocean. Today was as good as it gets. At it again in the AM and I can't wait. Captain Mike A big ebb and the 4th of July festivities made for a short day.
We ran out to the blue/green break and got some small bait stops going. We were halfway plugged with huge fish when it was time to go home. At it again in the AM. Happy 4th of July. Captain Mike |
